2015 Easkoot Marin County Pinot Noir Chileno Valley Vineyard


Holding steady to its commitment of creating cooler climate influenced Pinot Noir, the 2014 Easkoot Marin County bottling does its job beautifully. Bright and lively fruit shows itself with nice spice and subtle red and dark-skinned berry notes.

From Swan and Pommard clones, the 2014 was harvested on September 17th at 20.5 brix. 20% whole cluster was used.
Spontaneous fermentation, followed by aging in barrels, 8% of which were new, primarily from Marcel Cadet. 250 cases made.
The Petaluma Gap, while not an official AVA within the greater Sonoma AVA, is a geographical region which extends in a band from the Pacific Ocean to San Pablo Bay.
It is an area of low land 22 to 31 miles wide in the coast ranges of the northern San Francisco Bay Area. The western edge of the gap is located in the coastal lowlands between Bodega Bay and Tomales Bay. The eastern edge of the gap is located at San Pablo Bay around the mouth of the Petaluma River.

The Petaluma Gap affects wind patterns (and thus microclimates and air quality) in the San Francisco Bay Area. Fresh marine air generally blows eastward through the gap, branching into southward and northward streams which blow toward the Carquinez Strait and Santa Rosa respectively.
The southward stream brings marine air overland into the central Bay Area from the northwest. Warm air rises from the land and allows cold, moist air, plus winds and fog to move into the area.
The Chileno Valley vineyard is located in the hills just a few miles west of the town of Petaluma and 6 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Conglomerate over sandstone provide the soil to 777, 115 and some unknown clones that have been t-budded in 1997.

Some older vines from 1991 that have not been t-budded build the "old block" that Easkoot shares with Vision Cellar Wines.
A lifelong resident of Northern California, it was an uncle (Uncle Bob) who taught winemaker Matt Duffy the difference between wine being something to appreciate and not just something to drink. Matt stresses that this is an important distinction in the land of Gallo, where they serve Mad Dog 20/20 and Boones Farm with the school lunches and all children start drinking early. By his 20’s he was working at Twisted Oak Winery, both in the tasting room and in the cellar during crush.

At Vinify, where Easkoot is lured from grape to barrel to bottle, Matt quickly worked his way up from cellar rat to cellar master, overseeing hundreds of wines and watching different approaches and ideas play out in good and not-so-good ways. It’s a crash course in winemaking, but one that has left him with a unique skill set. But more importantly, Matt shares the Easkoot vision for a style of wine that we feel has been lost in California over the last few decades.
